“The health effects of air pollution imperil human lives. This fact is well-documented.” – Eddie Bernice Johnson
Are you living in an urban sprawl with your kids? You might not realize it, but you and your offspring are in great danger. You may ask why. This is because air pollution in big cities can cause some serious health issues.
According to ResearchGate, “Air pollution generated in urban areas is a global public health burden since half of the world’s population live in either cities, megacities or periurban areas.” This has now become a global issue.
In this write-up, I’ll address all the concerns on how diesel emission is affecting your kids and their future. Diesel emission specifically is one of the major reasons for this, and we’ll learn how.
As you might be aware, children’s lungs are still developing till they are 8 years old. This makes them more sensitive to diesel exhaust. If they are exposed to it, it increases the chance of asthma, bronchitis, and other respiratory illnesses.
Several studies have stated that kids who live in farms or small cities away from pollution live longer than those who live in metropolitan cities. They also have fewer health issues.
In the infographic, you can see all the side effects caused by carbon monoxide (CO) which is a primary content in diesel exhaust along with nitrogen and carbon oxides.
Diesel gas, though a great fuel source burning quickly and releasing vast amounts of energy, has often been labeled as cancer-causing, prompting scientists to research the matter and find solutions. Diesel gases are a great source of fuel, as they burn quickly and release vast amounts of energy. However, they have cancer-causing properties, and scientists have tried to find a suitable solution for it.
A study published by EPA (Environmental Protection Agency) has cited that exposure to diesel exhaust can lead to serious health conditions like asthma and respiratory illnesses and can worsen existing heart and lung disease, especially in children and the elderly, making us wonder whether the risk to reward ratio is worth it.
It’s almost unimaginable that a link between diesel fuel emission and impaired cognitive function could ever exist. Think about it: respiratory health is deteriorating because we’re inhaling cancer-causing pollutants. But hindered cognitive functions?
You might not believe it, but the truth is, that studies have shown children who live in areas with high levels of diesel pollution have lower IQ scores, memory/attention issues, and developmental delays.
Although it might not be the leading cause as other factors greatly contribute to this phenomenon (such as exposure to preservatives and artificial flavors in food, exposure to electronics at a young age, and heavy metals present in something as ordinary as your daily shampoo) the link still exists and there are no dyeing facts.
There are several reasons why cancer rates have been increasing. And one of the major reasons is, manufacturers are using diesel during the ignition process. But why?
These are the reasons that even after contains harmful pathogens and CO2, regular petroleum manufacturers stick to diesel. However, several technologies are being developed to make sure there are ways to clean and make it less cancer-causing.
Unity Fuel Solution Inc. and many other manufacturers have been taking an interest in DEF tanks and liquids. They are nontoxic and nonflammable, making them the best alternative. They are making exhaustion less harmful for humans.
Otherwise, diesel exhaust is classified as a Group 1 carcinogen, making it especially dangerous for children and their underdeveloped bodies, still struggling to process all the chemicals they’re exposed to from a very young age.
Everyone must remember that their grandparents at one point must have made a remark saying, “Kids these days are allergic to everything.” And we felt like the previous generations were healthier than us.
While it is true, this doesn’t mean that the generation before us was tougher or stronger. This happened because in the last few decades, allergies have spiked and this is scientifically proven. But why did this happen?
This happened because the air quality was decreased as there was an increase in air pollution. This was caused by diesel and CO2 emissions. And although our ancestors had their fair share of toxic exposure themselves (such as lead and mercury), the reality remains as we know it!
DID YOU KNOW?
Gasoline exhaust comes under group 2B on the list of the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC)!
If we have to compare, a stick of butter that you eat every week makes you less prone to high cholesterol and cardiovascular-related issues. But children are more susceptible to air pollutants than any grown person.
Inflation and high blood pressure are caused in young adults as they breathe air mixed with cancer-causing chemicals. Is there any way to fight it? It seems impossible, but fear not, the rising concern for reduced carbon emissions is global width.
Governments have been prompting everyone to switch to environment-friendly fuel sources, electric cars, and filling the market with healthier alternatives. Time will tell, but for now, we can agree that efforts are being made to save us and the lives of our children.
